Love Letter

I love my children -- what parent would say otherwise? I love to peak out the window and watch them playing outside at noon on a weekday in January. How many parents can say that? I love to see them exploring and using pile of wood, a stick, a shadow in new ways. I love to hear about the games they have invented while "doing nothing" in the backyard. I love to see their gentleness return, to hear their unsolicited "I love you's."

I love to see them carefree and calm. I see them excited and enthusiastic. I see them opinionated and sometimes angry. I don't see them as powerless, frustrated and prone to fits of rage as they used to be. I love to see them every day, all day long.

I DO believe in Fairies and Dragons and Lizard Birds

The Flashlight Society is a group of spies who recognize and identify each other by the special flashlights they carry. This is one of many fantasy groups Zane and Caleb have created. There are others. The Galactic Dragons are a team of superheroes. Zane is the Dark Insect. Caleb is Turtle Man. There are so many heroes in this group, I can't recall them all. They like to play this game on the trampoline. The Iguanas is another spy ring, made up of humans with code names; Eel, Guppy and Manta Ray. Iguanas never really come into it. The Killer B's is a family of superheroes that Ian helped create. They all begin with the letter B. Zane is Brainstorm (mental powers). Caleb is Bluestreak (super speed and stretch powers). Ian is Blink Dog (strength and teleportation). I am Bio Bender (nature powers). The babies have names too but they have changed a few times and I can't remember what they were last. Recently the boys have been playing a game with no name. Zane is half-bird, half-lizard named Lizika. Caleb is a giant spider called Saws. I am half-gorilla, half-python named Gorillathon (or so I've been told). And Ian is a Monituar (half-monitor, half-jaguar). This all takes place in a swamp.

Caleb, who is 4, has some other games which he and I play. Petunia-land is what we play most often. He is Super Dragon. I am Petunia (a platypus). We have many friends (all of his stuffed animals). Super Dragon has many birthdays (he's 599 years old). We prepare sweets, hand out invitations and have tea parties for all our friends. Super Dragon is also in a band, along with Mrmpht, the leopard, and Captain Carl, the flying moose. They play hard-rocking songs. Caleb entertains us regularly with songs he has composed. He is a prodigy on the air guitar. He has songs like, "Snakes are Mean," "Monster Trucks," "The Shut Up Song," and "Balloons." Caleb also has an imaginary friend called Hobby who is a flying pig.

Zane and Caleb have been creating characters inspired by Dungeons and Dragons which they have learned from Ian. Zane created a few in his head, most notably, Kodroths, the elf warrior. So Ian decided to take them on some adventures using a watered-down, kiddie version of Dungeons and Dragons, which he made up. Zane created an elf called Sitarr. Caleb is a dwarf named Tickle. Tickle is a good guy, but he is not nice. He has tattoos all over his body. And he carries a beat up shield. I must say, the name is quite misleading. Together, they have had to solve riddles and battle animated laundry and furniture. They live for game night when they can have new adventures with Tickle and Sitarr.
